What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We decided to release the game on Early Access, because we think it's already fun and we would like to improve it and prioritize our development goals based on community feedback.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will likely be in Early Access for at least a year. It probably won't be finished before 2021.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The finished game will have at least 5 levels. We are aiming for 2-3 hours of gameplay in a story mode playthrough, with high replayability. The goal is to make it a fun playthrough for one sitting that people will want to come back to and try different things. The game will have at least 4 playable characters.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game currently has three levels, three playable characters and over twenty enemy characters. Most of the basic gameplay and enemy AI is finished besides some character specific features. One playthrough of the main game currently lasts about one hour on average for a new player on normal difficulty based on playtests, but a more experienced player can speedrun it in under 30 minutes.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of the game is likely to increase with more content.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have most of the game planned already, but community feedback could affect the prioritization of what should be implemented first in some cases. If the community finds certain parts of the levels more fun that others, it might affect our level design. Some of the planned features are questionable as to how much demand there is for them so community feedback is very valuable in this regard. We of course welcome any new ideas also. We have received some valuable feedback from players and implemented some of their suggestions (for example the training mode and camera perspective settings).”

About This Game

Story:
Liberate your city from a cult of simulation theory maniacs.

Gameplay:
Vortex of Pain is a beat 'em up game with breakable 3D environments and smooth gameplay influenced by 2D classics. Evasions, grappling, and using the environment objects as weapons have a big role in the gameplay compared to most other beat 'em ups.

A controller is strongly recommended, but keyboard and mouse controls are supported also.

Features:
  • Single player and up to 4 player co-op story mode
  • Versus mode for 2-4 players
  • A customizable gameplay experience: 4 difficulty levels, adjustable enemy counts, and a randomizer mode that randomizes enemies and items
  • Various combat mechanics: weapons, grapples, strikes, air grapples, evasions, ear bites, flips, ball rolls, slides, splashes and free rotation throws
  • The environments play a large role in the gameplay: lots of breakable objects you can throw your enemies onto, and many props can be used as weapons
  • Weird enemies with unique abilities: mimes who copy moves from players, garbage collectors who eat and launch fragments of trash like a grenade, lagging modem-headed cyborg Minotaurs, recursive cardboard box -throwing thugs, etc...
  • Levels emphasize verticality to allow platforming and dangerous fighting areas
  • Boxing bags that aren't fooling around
  • Each playable character has the Atomic drop move!

Notes:
If you have problems with your controller's inputs, please disable Steam's controller configurations because they may cause issues with this game's button input detection. To do this, uncheck all gamepad configuration support checkboxes from Steam/Settings/Controller/General controller settings menu.
